What is RealVNC?
RealVNC (aka VNC or Virtual Network Computing) is a 3rd-party application that allows remote parties (such as our Technical Support department) to view and control your computer over the internet, without having to physically visit you at your office to do so. StorMan does not make or own RealVNC - we simply make use of the technology to speed up support response times.
RealVNC can be setup in two different ways. The first method allows any authorised user to connect to your computer (so long as they know the password). The second method requires that you log the person in before they will be able to see or control anything. StorMan uses the second method, as it is far more secure. It required that you log us in (as opposed to someone connecting without warning).
How much is RealVNC?
RealVNC has several varients, but the Free edition - which is fine for what we need - is free.
Why would I be required to install RealVNC?
Someone from our Technical Support department may ask you to install RealVNC so that they can remotely see & control your computer with your permission. This greatly speeds up response times for support requests.
How do I install RealVNC?
To install RealVNC, simply follow the instructions below...
| Step 1 | Visit the RealVNC website at www.realvnc.com.
| Step 2 | Follow the links to download the Free Edition (usually the Windows EXE file is best), as shown below.

| Step 3 | Once the program downloads to your computer, run the installer to install it. Select all default options when installing - these will be fine.
| Step 4 | A dialog box may appear, asking you to set password for VNC. Enter a secure password (using numbers and MiXeD-cAsE letters), but do not tell us what this is.
| Step 5 | Close the installer once it has finished.
| Step 6 | You should now see a new white 'VNC' icon in your system tray (near the clock). If you are on the phone to StorMan Support and they are ready for you to connect to them, just right-click this system-tray icon, and select 'Add new client' from the menu that appears. Enter the IP address or hostname as provided by StorMan Support to connect to them. |
Do I need to tell my IT technician about RealVNC?
In some cases, strict networking hardware may block the RealVNC program or VNC protocols. When this happens, we will not be able to use RealVNC to addist you, and your IT technician will often be required to come in and "allow" VNC to communicate through your networking hardware or firewall.
What about other VNC programs, like Ultra VNC or Chicken of the VNC?
We prefer RealVNC, but you can use any program - so long as your program of choice is secure, and able to communicate with RealVNC and the general VNC protocols.
What do I need to be aware of when using RealVNC?
VNC allows remote access to your computer - all someone needs to be able to access your computer via VNC, is the password. As such, we recommend that you change your VNC password regularly, and use a strong password containing both numbers and MiXeD-cAsE letters. You may also wish to close (exit) VNC when you don't need it.
Always ensure you keep your VNC software up to date, by checking the website of the manufacturer. If the manufacturer finds a vulnerability in the software, patch it as soon as possible!
